Is the poker profession a respectable one?

In the part of the world that I live, I have noticed that professional poker players are often looked down upon compared to other professions like sports players.
Most people feel that those who make a living out of poker should not be proud of it because they are living off people's painful losses.
Is that the case in your area?
Are professional poker players more respected generally?

There's a lot of players that very respectable. Doyle Brunson the OG of poker should be the face of poker.
However, there's players that are shady/crooks I've seen it all, but that's not limited to just poker.

Yeah I guess it all boils down to the type of players in question. The problem is that some people tend to generalize all the professional poker players.

If you can provide a life for yourself without knowingly hurting others any profession should no be judged.

Yeah, it is not like anybody was first to come and play. So anyone losing is basically their responsibility. They definitely should have seen it coming, it's a game afterall

For sure. Some people just look down on gambling. It's been suggested that are you praying on gambling addicts. I don't think anyone plays with that intent. Also there are 9 or 10 to a table. Sonmeone will be winning that money.

Definitely not everyone will be going home with the prize, that is why it is called a game. Maybe some people need orientation on how something like this works

Skilled players typically win more than they lose. I haven't had to invest/deposit in several months, because I've been growing my poker funds over time.

It's good to remember there is always another game. You can't win them all.

Yes, it's a good profession and like any other kind of profession, it has its own challenges. A lot of Poker pros face stigma in many areas and some people misunderstand the skill and strategy that's involved. So, you need emotional control and critical thinking in this game.

I would say yes, staying steady and betting against the odds on a hand of cards takes some guts.

I think if you're going to get into poker you gotta man up (or woman up) and take things like an adult. You can't complain about whatever is unfair. It reminds me of that scene on "White Men Can't Jump" where Woody Harrellson says "Under no circumstances do you ask for the money back", lol.

Here in my country, where players of other forms of gambling are looked with disdain, pro poker players are highly respected. That's because people see them as intellectuals who are able to overcome complex probability and mathematics to stay winning in poker.

It all boils down to your location, religious tolerance, culture and societal values. In United States, professional poker games are highly respected personalities. But if you are from African and Middle east, poker players are regarded as criminal minded beings and should be avoided.

There are different perceptions to poker as a profession. Some may regard it as a nice profession and the others might be negative about it simply because of the luck factor and the possibility of losing money.

I think it depends on who you ask. Some people still see gambling as sketchy, but poker is becoming more mainstream and recognized as a skill game. If you're making good money and treating it professionally managing bankroll, paying taxes, etc. then it's as respectable as any other business to me.

When played professionally with discipline, bankroll management, and ethical behavior, it’s a legitimate skill-based competitive field. It demands math, psychology, patience, and emotional control.
