How do you handle downswings without depleting your bankroll?

When I hit a downswing, I move down in stakes and focus on playing solid, simple poker. I review my hands, avoid chasing losses, and remind myself variance happens. Protecting my bankroll is more important than trying to recover quickly.

Do you separate poker money from life money?

Yes, I do. I have a budget for entertainment, which includes subscriptions for streaming services, movies, poker and other casino games. I never go over the limit. If the funds are deployed, I will wait until I refill the next month.

What are some common bankroll management mistakes?

Impatience and emotion, these are the main culprits. When you are playing stakes that are too high, when you chase losses, when you move up too quickly after a few wins, and treat poker money like everyday cash, you are making big mistakes.. Another mistake is ignoring downswings and refusing...

What are the best practices for managing your bankroll when playing live poker regularly?

You need to track every session, wins, losses, hours, everything. A lot of players feel like they’re doing fine while the numbers quietly disagree. Also set stop-loss limits for yourself, not just because the cards know you’re stuck, but because emotional decisions usually get worse as...

Do you ever break your bankroll rules? Be honest

Yes, I’ve broken my bankroll rules a few times, usually after a frustrating session when I convinced myself I could win it back quickly. It never ended well. Now, even when I feel that urge, I stop playing and come back later with a clear head.

Have you ever lost your bankroll while sticking to your bankroll management rules?

Even with solid bankroll management, players can still lose through prolonged variance. So, yes, this happens to me sometimes. It happens usually when I hit an extended downswing. But I try to come back by moving down in stakes, and rebuild gradually.

Do you end your sessions when you feel tilt starting to set in?

I try to end the session or at least take a serious break. Tilt usually gets expensive fast because it clouds judgment before you fully notice it. Once I feel frustration affecting decisions, the priority would be resetting, and not trying to winback losses.

Confidence helps me play more decisively and trust solid reads without hesitation. I still play when unsure, but usually I slow down, simplify decisions, and stick closely to fundamentals like position, hand strength, and pot odds. I try to stay disciplined.
