If someone wants to become a referee specifically in American football, how would he start going about it? Is there something like a school he needs to attend and graduate before being passed to become and how long does that training process last?

You're right. I've seen a ref get injured with cramps officiating a UEFA Champions League game. He couldn't continue as another ref had to change him mid game.
