Leaderboards can actually motivate you to some extent but only if they are fair. If it only rewards only people that practically play for twenty four hours every day, the average players will lose interest very quickly.

I think they can, as long as everyone treats them as a bit of friendly competition. A leaderboard adds something extra to play for and can keep people coming back, but I wouldn't want it to become more important than simply enjoying the game with friends.
