The indie roguelike Balatro, inspired by poker mechanics, has achieved impressive financial success on mobile platforms, generating nearly $4.4 million since its release in September.

Mobile Success

Data from AppMagic (via PocketGamer.biz) reveals that Balatro earned $1 million in its first week across the App Store and Google Play, with launch day alone bringing in $162,000. The game reached its highest weekly revenue just a week later on September 29th, peaking at $200,000. While sales slowed in subsequent weeks, Balatro experienced a resurgence after being nominated for Game of the Year at this year’s The Game Awards, earning $727,000 in its second-highest grossing week to date.

A Premium Mobile Experience

Unlike many mobile games that rely on free-to-play models with microtransactions, Balatro launched as a premium title with a £9.99/$9.99 upfront cost. The game is also available via Apple Arcade, increasing its player base further, though revenue from this subscription platform remains unclear.

Cross-Platform Journey

Balatro initially debuted on PC and consoles in February, but its mobile launch significantly boosted its popularity. The game’s success on mobile reflects growing interest in premium, microtransaction-free titles in the mobile gaming market.

Controversies and Developer Statements

Balatro’s developer, Localthunk, has been vocal about their commitment to avoiding “predatory monetization.” In a Reddit post before the mobile release, the team emphasized that the game would not include microtransactions, aiming to deliver a fair and straightforward gaming experience.

However, Balatro’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Earlier this year, the game faced a temporary ban in some regions due to concerns over its perceived gambling-related content. Localthunk addressed the issue in March, stating:

“I still believe that the rating is unwarranted, but there is some grey area for interpretation from PEGI, and at this point, it is what it is.”

Balatro’s success as a premium game with no microtransactions highlights a shift in mobile gaming preferences, with players demonstrating willingness to pay upfront for high-quality, fair experiences. As its nomination at The Game Awards continues to drive visibility, Balatro is proving to be a standout title in the crowded roguelike and mobile gaming spaces.
