The New England Patriots are bringing back Josh McDaniels to be their offensive coordinator.

The New England Patriots are continuing their trend of revisiting familiar faces. After appointing Mike Vrabel as their new head coach, the team has reportedly brought back another longtime ally, hiring Josh McDaniels as their offensive coordinator, according to Kirk Minihane of Barstool.

This marks McDaniels’ third tenure as New England’s offensive coordinator. His journey with the Patriots began in 2001 as a personnel assistant. By 2004, he had been promoted to quarterbacks coach and was named offensive coordinator in 2006. Over the next three seasons, McDaniels called plays for Tom Brady before leaving to become head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2009. His time in Denver was short-lived, as he was let go before completing two seasons.

McDaniels briefly served as the St. Louis Rams’ offensive coordinator in 2011 before returning to New England in 2012 to reclaim his role as offensive coordinator. He held that position for the next decade, helping the team secure multiple championships, before leaving in 2022 to take on the head coaching role for the Las Vegas Raiders. However, much like his stint with Denver, his time in Las Vegas was cut short, as the Raiders fired him midway through the 2023 season.

While McDaniels has struggled as a head coach, his track record as an offensive coordinator is undeniable. The Patriots, who have had one of the league’s weakest offenses in recent years, are in dire need of a spark. With a young quarterback like Drake Maye under center, McDaniels’ offensive expertise could be pivotal in revitalizing the team.

After two straight 4-13 seasons, New England is hoping McDaniels can help lead a much-needed turnaround.
