In a landmark moment for the poker world, the International Mind Sports Association (IMSA) has officially recognized poker as a Mind Sport, placing it in the same league as chess and eSports. This recognition underscores poker’s intellectual depth, highlighting its reliance on strategy, mental acuity, and decision-making under pressure.

Founded in 2005, the IMSA is a global organization dedicated to promoting competitive intellectual disciplines. This decision comes after years of tireless advocacy by the World Poker Federation (WPF), which represents over 45 national poker federations worldwide. By showcasing poker’s alignment with IMSA’s criteria for Mind Sports, the WPF has solidified the game’s status as a strategic and skill-based competition.

November 16, 2024: A Historic Day for Poker

This recognition is the culmination of years of effort by countless individuals who see poker as a true intellectual pursuit,” said Igor Trafane, President of the WPF. “It’s a pivotal step in establishing poker’s rightful place on the global stage.”

The announcement was celebrated with a special tournament attended by more than 70 players. Major poker organizations like PokerStars, the Brazilian Series of Poker (BSOP), Suprema Poker, and H2 Club lent their support to the event. Winners were awarded coveted entries to prestigious tournaments, including the Main Events of the Latin America Poker Tour (LAPT), the BSOP, and the São Paulo State Poker Championship (CPH).

The Impact of Recognition

Poker’s new status as a Mind Sport brings significant benefits:

• For Players: Greater legitimacy, new career opportunities, and access to international competition.
• For the Industry: Enhanced stability and growth prospects.
• For Sponsors and Businesses: A more structured environment to foster investments and partnerships.

Leonardo Cavarge, CEO of the WPF, emphasized the federation’s commitment to formalizing poker’s competitive structure. “Our next steps involve creating standardized regulations, safeguarding players, and building international tournament frameworks,” he stated.

The Road to Recognition
The journey to this milestone began in December 2022, when the WPF was granted provisional IMSA membership. Over the past two years, the federation has worked to unify national federations, collaborate with governments, and advocate for poker’s strategic merits. By emphasizing its reliance on mental skill and high-pressure decision-making, the WPF successfully positioned poker among other celebrated Mind Sports.

Looking Ahead
While challenges such as public perception and regulation remain, this recognition marks a critical turning point in poker’s evolution as a sport. WPF leaders see it as a foundation for future growth and global acceptance.
