A jersey that Victor Wembanyama swapped with a young fan in December sold for a staggering $73,200 at auction Saturday night.
The San Antonio Spurs rookie sensation wore the City Edition jersey during a Dec. 27 game against the Brooklyn Nets, where he racked up 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 blocks in a 96-87 victory. After the game, he noticed a young fan holding a sign that read: “Victor Wembanyama, will you swap jerseys with me?” He obliged, trading his game-worn jersey and posing for a photo while holding the fan’s youth-sized version.
Less than a month later, the jersey hit the auction block with an opening bid of $10,000. The final bidding surge came in the last hours, starting at $33,000 before skyrocketing to its final $73,200 sale price. Wembanyama reacted to the auction on X with a simple crying emoji.
The sale comes just days after the Spurs announced on Feb. 20 that the one-time All-Star will miss the rest of the season due to deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. Despite the setback, San Antonio remains hopeful for his full recovery ahead of next season.
