Managing your bankroll for regular live poker can be tricky. Most experienced players suggest keeping at least 20-30 buy-ins for the stakes you're playing, which helps you ride out the inevitable downswings without going broke. They also recommend never bringing more than 5% of your total bankroll to a single session, no matter how good the game looks. But here's what I'm curious about how do you actually stay disciplined when you're running hot and feeling confident? Do you stick to those percentages, or do you give yourself a little more freedom when things are going well?

Keep your cash separate, use envelopes or a dedicated pocket in your wallet. Track every session, win or loss. Don't bring more than you're willing to lose in a night. And here's a big one: leave your debit card at home. That impulse to pull more cash after a bad beat will destroy your roll fast.

You need to track every session, wins, losses, hours, everything. A lot of players feel like they’re doing fine while the numbers quietly disagree. Also set stop-loss limits for yourself, not just because the cards know you’re stuck, but because emotional decisions usually get worse as frustration builds.

Discipline is the hardest part nobody talks about. When you are running hot, your brain starts whispering to you “increase it a little ” 😂 I was literally talking about this with one friend that plays live cash games. He made profit three weekends straight and suddenly started carrying almost half his bankroll to sessions. One bad night wiped everything. 🤣

The most important thing is emotional control. When you are on winning streaks, you are encouraged to take risky bets, when you are on losing streaks, you also start making risky beats in a hope to chase loss. You should always know your limit, know when to stop

If I were to play live poker, it would be purely recreationally, so I probably wouldn't follow strict bankroll management guidelines for my buy-ins. When I play online, it's a different story because I'm more focused on building my bankroll over the long term.

Another advantage of online poker is that you can apply proper bankroll management at much smaller stakes than you typically find in live games, which helps reduce risk and makes it easier to move up gradually.
