What does “HODL” mean and why do people say it?

I was arguing with my neighbor and he keep shouting "HODL!!!" like it's a prayer point. I have come across a lot of riddles in crypto and this one too. If holding is the best strategy, who will tell me when to sell before it crash again? I'm just confused because those grammar are quite confusing. Who can explain this better?

It is just the twisted version of the English world HOLD. It simply means holding onto your coins even if the market is not favorable. By Hodling you are betting that your investment will eventually pay off even if it does not seem like that presently.
