What is a “smart contract”?

I’ve been reading about “smart contracts” and I’m just laughing because it sounds funny . But they said it’s just a code that runs itself. I tried to imagine it but my brain can't picture it well. It feels like those fancy naming just to make normal things look advanced. What exactly is smart contract?
