When should you move down limits/stakes?

How many buy-ins before you should consider moving up or down stakes?

I believe the standard rule for micros is 20-25x the buy-in before moving up, and down stakes for tourneys, and SNG's.
Not sure how it works in cash games as I typically don't play cash, so I haven't read up on bankroll management for cash games.

A lot of people don't what to move down their stakes. They feel it's a disgrace but I don't see it that way. If your bankroll as reduced to certain point why force big stakes because of pride? There is no point doing that.

It amazes me how people can take things and make them so personal to the appoint that their pride lower their self-esteem, emotionally degrading themselves. Do you mean that’s the worst thing that you can do and expect to come back and recover from.

My physical and mental capacity tells me where I should and should not be playing and at what level…. I keep things simple.

I think you should move down as soon as your bankroll no longer comfortably supports your current stakes. This helps to protect your bankroll, reduces pressure, and gives you a chance to rebuild your confidence before moving back up.

But I will say, in terms of buy ins, it depends on a few factors.

Firstly, can you top back up easily? Or is this it?

If it is it, then obviously you should have more buy ins. If you can top back up, then you can be more aggressive with your bankroll.

From a Professional stand point you're looking at:

Online Mtts - 75-100 buy ins
Online cash - 50+ buy ins

Live MTTs - 65- 80 buy ins
Live Cash - 35+ buy ins (lowest variance format)

Interesting. So you recommend having more buy-ins for online play than for live poker? Is that because you believe there's more variance in online games?
