WSOP Updates Rules Ahead of Paradise Festival in Response to Main Event Controversy

As the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Paradise festival kicks off this Friday in the Bahamas, the organization has unveiled a series of notable updates to its official rulebook. These changes appear to be a direct response to the controversy that dominated headlines following the WSOP Main Event final table this summer.

The Fallout from “Laptop-Gate”

The controversy stemmed from eventual Main Event champion Jonathan Tamayo, who was seen consulting with high-profile pros like Dominik Nitsche and Joe McKeehen during breaks. Notably, the group had a laptop on the rail, which drew criticism from the poker community. Concerns ranged from allegations of live coaching to suspicions about the potential use of solvers, sparking debates over the fairness of such practices.

Tamayo himself acknowledged the support of Nitsche and McKeehen in his victory, stating, “If Joe and Dom weren’t here, I likely do not win this tournament.” While the extent of the advantage remains unclear, the incident ignited calls for more robust rules to prevent similar situations in the future.

WSOP’s New Rules Target Electronic Assistance

The updated WSOP rulebook includes specific provisions to address electronic assistance and coaching. Rule 63b explicitly prohibits the use of charts, apps, and other electronic tools by both players and spectators within the tournament area. Violations can result in player disqualification and removal of spectators from the venue. Additionally, spectators are barred from providing live coaching, viewing live-streamed content, or using electronic devices for assistance.

When events reach the final three tables, even stricter measures come into play under Rule 63c, which bans all electronic devices for players and spectators. Devices may only be accessed during breaks or after elimination.

Expanded Rules for Device Usage
Additional rules around electronic devices aim to ensure fairness throughout the tournament:
• Devices cannot be placed on the table or its rail.
• All devices must remain silent during play.
• Players may only use devices to text or email if their cards are mucked.

• Phone conversations must be conducted away from the table.
• Spectators are prohibited from using devices to view delayed streams or electronic tools.

Bubble Rule Adjustment
A new rule has also been introduced for the tournament bubble. Players who leave their seats during bubble play will not be allowed to observe action at other tables, aiming to preserve competitive integrity.

The new rules represent a significant shift in tournament policy, underscoring WSOP’s commitment to addressing fairness and transparency. While these changes aim to prevent repeats of the Main Event controversy, they also raise intriguing questions: could stricter enforcement lead to player ejections or other unprecedented outcomes in high-stakes events?

With WSOP Paradise just days away, the poker world will be watching closely to see how these rules are implemented and whether they have the desired impact. The full list of updated rules is now available online.
