I just finished a session now and stared at my balance for like 5 minutes. Be honest, at what point do you accept that you need to move down? Because ego is a dangerous thing. You tell yourself it’s just variance, but your bankroll keeps shrinking. Sometimes I feel like moving down early is smarter.

For me, it’s usually when I’ve taken a few tough hits and I can feel my confidence starting to slip. If I’m thinking more about the money than making good decisions, that’s my cue to move down. I’d rather rebuild at a lower stake than chase losses and dig a deeper hole. There’s no shame in protecting your bankroll. Sometimes stepping back is actually the smartest play.

Whenever I drop below 20 buy-ins, I move down in stakes.

I become much stricter with my bankroll management if I'm playing higher stakes, unless I’m taking a shot in a tournament above my usual bankroll.

When you start playing scared. If you're hesitating on standard bets or dreading the flop, you're already too high. I move down once I lose 30-40 percent of my roll. Some people wait longer, but by then they're already tilted.

I move down when my bankroll no longer comfortably supports my current stakes.
A common rule is dropping down if I lose enough buy-ins that I fall below the recommended range for that level. I don’t wait until I’m forced out, I adjust early to protect what’s left.
