When you're choosing tournaments to play, do you prefer smaller fields or larger fields?

Smaller fields usually mean a better chance of making the money and reaching final tables, but the payouts are often smaller.

Larger fields can have much bigger prize pools and top-heavy payouts, but you'll need to outlast a lot more players and deal with more variance.

Personally, I think both have their advantages depending on your goals. If you're looking for more consistent results, smaller fields can be appealing. If you're chasing bigger scores and don't mind the swings, larger fields can be worth the shot.

Which do you prefer and why? Do you adjust your tournament selection based on bankroll, skill edge, or simply what games are available?

Smaller fields usually offer better chances of cashing and more consistent results, while bigger fields have much higher payouts but greater variance. It depends whether you prefer steady returns or big, rare scores.

Big scores become less rare if you put in the volume. Online poker is great for that because you get more hands per hour and can multi-table.

I lean more towards smaller fields. I understand the attraction of huge prizes, but I prefer situations where skill has more room to dictating the outcome. Smaller fields usually give me that feeling.

I have a high win rate in smaller-field tournaments, but the opportunity to win a large prize for only a small portion of my bankroll is what attracts me to big-field tournaments.

The larger prize pools are exciting, but they also come with much higher variance. In smaller fields, my edge tends to show up more consistently, while in large-field events, even strong players can go long stretches without a significant score. Finding the right balance between maximizing my win rate and chasing bigger payouts is always an interesting challenge.
