Well, it's good for those that are new to poker to start with small games and practice with free tools. That could be a great way to build your skills and confidence without risking too much.

Number 2 advice to me is not realistic approach to poker game. Observing your opponents may be highly misleading because some poker players may apper thumb while they are smart and very intelligent.

Observing one's opponents can be the best decision in poker; however, i agree that some players may be able to give out false information and that is why we don't solely depend on observing opponents' betting patterns alone, there are other things to follow too.
 
For better winnings in poker, one must know:
1. The fundamentals of strategy and odds.
2. Decoding physical reactions and patterns in betting from an opponent.
3. Analysis of table environment.

Bankroll management is needed to avoid going broke. Emotional control and discipline is also important to allow for better decisions at the table. Combining these factors will greatly increase your odds of success.
