Bronny James has yet to make a significant impact with the Los Angeles Lakers, who selected him late in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft. Since the start of the 2024-25 season, James has appeared in less than a third of the Lakers’ games, tallying just four total points in his limited NBA action.

His Dec. 8 appearance against the Portland Trail Blazers marked his first game for the Lakers in nearly a month, with his previous outing coming on Nov. 10 against the Toronto Raptors. While his on-court contributions for the Lakers have been minimal so far, James has made a massive impact off the court.

The rookie has reportedly sold over 500,000 jerseys, generating upwards of $50 million in revenue for the franchise. His jersey sales have set a record for a first-year player, even surpassing those of his father, LeBron James, during his rookie season. Alongside his commercial success, James has secured endorsement deals with major brands, including Nike, Google, Beats by Dre, and PSD Underwear.

Though Bronny has spent more time recently with the Lakers’ G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, he has shown flashes of his potential at that level. On Dec. 12, he erupted for 30 points on 13 made shots in South Bay’s narrow loss to the Valley Suns. Just days earlier, he recorded 16 points against the San Diego Clippers and matched that total in a Dec. 13 rematch with the Suns.

James’ G League performances have drawn praise, with former NBA star Eddie Johnson defending the young player from critics, referring to his detractors as “roaches” after his standout game against the Suns.

While South Bay now enters a lengthy break before facing the Cleveland Charge on Dec. 27, fans are eagerly awaiting James’ next opportunity to shine on the court. At just 20 years old, the former USC standout is still developing his game, but his early success off the court and flashes of brilliance in the G League indicate that his story is just beginning.

That's probably why his rookie contract is worth millions, which is wild for a 55th pick.
