Poker is not only a game but a encyclopedia on its own. To understand and comprehend poker, you have to know at least 50% of poker slang or terms before you can compete favorably with other poker players. I'm pretty familiar with most terms in poker, but understanding terminology has nothing to do with gameplay. However, it's a easy tell you're a new player, if you don't know basic poker slang.

One of the things that I first learned when starting out in poker was the terminology. I know that I understand the most widely used terminology in poker. It was important for me to study and understand them so that I don't look lost when I visit a poker room. Most communication in poker room and in poker circles are done with poker terms.

It's just for the theoretical aspect of playing poker that learning all those poker terminologies have any impact. Aside from that, they're completely useless when it comes to actual playing which is why I don't place any importance on them.
