At 21, Nick Marchington was a poker newcomer when he first reached the big stage, finishing seventh at the 2019 World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event and earning $1,525,000. Five years later, the British poker professional has honed his skills, proving his mettle under the spotlight at the North American Poker Tour (NAPT) main event in Las Vegas.
Reflecting on his growth, Marchington shared, “Back then, I was just starting out, especially in tournaments. I was inexperienced. Now, with six years of playing poker professionally, I feel much more prepared for everything a final table involves.”
Marchington dominated the final day, ultimately outlasting a competitive field of 895 entrants in the $5,000 buy-in tournament held at Resorts World Las Vegas. Following his victory, he expressed his excitement to PokerStars reporters: “It was truly a dream. This is one of the best experiences I’ve had in poker. Being the chip leader and keeping it throughout the final table made it even more special.”
For his impressive win, Marchington took home $765,200, bringing his lifetime tournament earnings to $3.35 million. The event, marking the NAPT’s second annual stop at Resorts World, featured three initial flights and spanned five days, with the top 127 players making the money and securing at least $8,900.
Sami Bechahed, last year’s NAPT champion, continued his success by finishing 37th, while other notable deep runs included Upeshka De Silva (45th), Maria Konnikova (14th), and David Peters (42nd).
With six players left on the final day, Marchington sent Masato Yokosawa out in sixth, earning Yokosawa $155,550. Joel Micka made a strong move by knocking out two players in succession, ultimately reducing the field to three. Marchington held onto his chip lead and was dealt a fortunate ace on the river, ending Jeff Madsen’s run in third place and sending him home with $341,750.
Heads-up play was brief, with Marchington holding a 4:1 chip advantage over Micka. After a cautious pre-flop check, both players saw a board of J♠ 6♠ 5♠. Marchington bet, Micka called, and continued calls followed on a 3♠ turn. The river, a 2♠, saw Marchington shove, and Micka quickly called with 5♣ 4♣ for a straight. Marchington, however, held 7♠ 4♠, giving him the winning hand with a seven-high straight.
Micka earned $478,450 for his runner-up finish, adding to his second-place finishes at both the 2008 LAPT Costa Rica and the 2013 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. His career earnings now stand at $2.1 million.
This marked Marchington’s second win of 2024, following his triumph at the GUKPT Coventry, earning him $189,062. He now ranks 53rd in the Card Player Player of the Year race.
