I always lean toward cash games first. The structure is simpler and you get more repetition there. In tournaments, one bad spot can send you home after hours of waiting and that's so bad and rough for beginners.

I agree. I have friends who are less experienced, and they usually don't have the patience to sit through a tournament. Many prefer cash games because they can jump in and out whenever they want, while tournaments require a much bigger time commitment and a lot more patience.
