The Importance of Tournament Selection

It's crucial to play tournaments that benefit your game. Especially, if your goal is to be a winning tourney player.

I am very strict on the tourneys I choose to player. I prefer slower formats, because I believe it's rewards skilled players during a lengthy game. However, if the blinds are too slow, I'll get bored.

For online MTT's 5-10 minute blinds is what I look for, and I typically find myself doing better than most. I also prefer 8 or 9 max tables, especially for tournaments. You're not forced to make as many decisions, and I think that helps a little with variance.

Choosing the correct buy-in for your bankroll is equally as important. I always have a bankroll management strategy when I play online poker. Discipline is a must, especially in tournaments. Breaking bankroll management during downswings is a good way to go broke. Especially if you spiral into playing bigger buy-ins, because you start fuming after losses add up.

Variance in tournaments is higher than cash games, which is why it's harder to be a winning player if you grind poker tourneys online. A lot of players cannot handle the variance in tournaments, and variance is much less harsh if you grind cash games.

Prizes/prizepool is another factor when I look into the MTT's I'm trying to play. It must be rewarding enough for my time, if I make it to the end. Hope this helps! Thoughts?

Tournament selection is pretty much underrated. People just jump into any flashy guarantee they come across. I did that once because the prize pool was big, but the burnout was real.
