Royal Card Club Brings Legal Poker to Downtown Brownwood

A brand-new social card club is making its way to Downtown Brownwood, Texas. Set to open at 104 S. Broadway, The Royal Card Club promises a safe, legal, and welcoming environment for poker enthusiasts. Unlike traditional casinos, the club operates on a membership-based model, where players compete against each other, not the house. Instead of a rake, members pay a “seat fee” that helps cover operational costs, employee wages, and exclusive member benefits, ensuring a community-driven experience.

Bringing Poker Back to Brownwood

Poker is more than just a game of chance—it’s a battle of skill and strategy. For years, local poker players have had to travel out of town or even out of state to find legal games, taking their money with them. The Royal Card Club aims to keep those dollars in Brownwood while also attracting players from across Texas.

“We’re a group of local poker players who were tired of driving hours just to play a game that’s completely legal here,” said co-owner Steven McCrane. “We want to make Brownwood a true poker destination.”

Deep Local Roots & Community Investment

Founded by four Brownwood-area locals—Steven McCrane, Kim and Robert Clark, and Michael Bunker—the club is built on strong community ties.

• Steven McCrane comes from a family of entrepreneurs, helping run Shaw’s Marketplace and businesses like Fuzzy’s Taco Shop in downtown Brownwood.

• Kim and Robert Clark own KANAR RV Sales in Early and are active in the Early Chamber of Commerce and local charities.

• Michael Bunker, a USA Today bestselling author and columnist for Brownwood News, has long been an advocate for the town’s economic growth.

Their commitment to revitalizing downtown is already evident. The Royal Card Club has invested over $100,000 into local businesses, hiring area craftsmen and forming partnerships with Pioneer Taphouse, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, and The Barton Team Realty.

A Boost for the Local Economy

Poker is known for drawing dedicated players willing to travel for great venues, and The Royal Card Club is positioning itself as a premier destination. The club expects to bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to local restaurants, shops, and hotels, further fueling Brownwood’s resurgence.

“We’re excited to be part of Brownwood’s growth,” said Michael Bunker. “This isn’t just about poker—it’s about building community, creating entertainment, and boosting the local economy.”
