I have heard that the most important skill to master in poker is probably bankroll management. It's the foundation that lets you weather variance, play consistently, and make better decisions without stressing about money.

But I have also heard of hand selection, reading opponents and emotional control.

What would you say is the most important skill to learn?

Being able to put your opponents on a range of hands, based on how many hands you’ve seen them play and how they’ve played them, including picking up on betting patterns, is also an important skill in poker. I agree that emotional control helps you play better, but I don’t believe it’s a skill.

I think the most important skills in poker are the hard, technical ones like understanding odds, calculating pot odds and equity, and reading betting patterns. Emotional control and making mathematically sound decisions are also very important in a poker game.

The most important skill is the emotional control first before anything. I have seen someone that knows everything but one bad beat can finish everything because they can't control their emotions. If your mind is not stable, even the best strategy can fail.
