Mathematics is a vast subject that has many areas. While poker has to do with having the right skills and being lucky, do you believe that understanding a lot about mathematics can be a great way to achieve success when you play poker?

Being able to count outs, and having basic understanding of percentages helps in poker, the more you know, the better.

For example if you flop a flush draw, the chance of hitting a flush by the river is 35%. If you have a open ended straight on the flop, the chance of hitting those cards by the river is 31.5%. I keep those odds in mind when I'm chasing draws to make a flush or straight.

Your ability to achieve success at the poker table relies hugely on your understanding of probability and statistics. So, you can see that knowledge of mathematical principles is equally critical but it's obviously not everything you need to win.

Poker is more of luck than knowledge of mathematics. In my opinion, probability will give a player a basic knowledge of chance of winning but does no guarantee success. But it is more better to know what is likely to happen than to be dumb with no clue whatever.
